$12,000 melons sold in Japan during bad economy

$12,000 melons sold in Japan during bad economy

In Japan somebody sold $12,000 melons, which sounds great doesn't it? Unfortunately, those melons have sold for much higher prices in the past, which means they must have disappointed the sellers who put so much time and effort into growing them.
These rare Yubari melons normally sell for much higher than a mere $12,000. Isn't it strange that these rare melons going for thousands of dollars is actually a disappointment? In some years the Yubari melons sell for at least twice that. What a shock for the Hokkaido greenhouses that grew them this year!
Can you imagine selling a melon like this for thousands though? It seems like perhaps the prices are inflated. How on Earth could they be worth so much money? Sure, these are pieces of fruit you would buy at the grocery store, but still. $12,000 melons are super expensive. Imagine paying $30,000 in years when the economy is better. That is insanity!
