Casey Anthony is the mother of Florida toddler Caylee Anthony, who went missing in mid-June 2008. The body of Caylee Anthony was found on December 11, 2008, near the home of her grandparents, George and Cindy Anthony.
On October 9, 2009, prosecutors released 1,400 pages of documents, including photos and evidence. Among the documents were pictures of Casey Anthony's tattoo that reads "La Bella Vida." The tattoo was done just two weeks after little Caylee was last seen alive.1
On January 25, 2010, Anthony pleaded guilty to check fraud and was sentenced to time already served. She admitted to writing $650 worth of checks from her friend Amy Huizenga's personal checkbook. In court, Anthony said, "I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm sorry for what i did. I take complete and full responsibility for my actions, and I'd like to apologize to Amy. I wish I'd been a better friend.2

The Death Penalty?

In a reversal of their December 5, 2008 decision, a notice of intent was filed by prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Anthony. The filing took place on April 13, 2009, by prosecutors who stated, "sufficient aggravating circumstances exist to justify the imposition of the death penalty."3

Questionable Photos

In July of 2008, photos surfaced showing Anthony partying in a club right around the time of her daughter's disappearance. The courts have yet to determine whether or not these images will be admissible as evidence against her. On March 6, 2009, a different group of disturbing photos that had been found on Casey Anthony's computer were released to the public, including numerous drawings featuring skeletons in a variety of positions.4

Potentially Incriminating Videos

On January 12, 2009, a video tape was released that showed the private investigator hired by the Anthony family at the site where Caylee was found a few weeks later. The investigator, Dominic Casey, is shown searching the site and pushing a metal rod into the ground. He is on the cell phone and according to a reporter, he said: "it would be right here."5
Later that week, on January 17, 2009, another video tape was released which showed a conversation between Casey Anthony and her parents from August of 2008. In the video, Casey Anthony is speaking to her parents via a telephone while she is in prison. During the conversation, Casey Anthony expresses her frustration with her situation and says: "I need to be looked at as a victim."6 7

Investigation

Casey Anthony reportedly borrowed a neighbor's shovel and was seen digging in her parents' backyard around the time of her daughter's disappearance. The police have seized the shovel along with Anthony's computer and car. They have reported that they found some "abnormalities" in the dirt but would not elaborate.8 9
On August 27, 2008, lab results confirmed that a human body had been in the trunk of Casey Anthony's car.10

String of Lies

Although Caylee Anthony had been missing since June 9, 2008, Casey Anthony did not notify the police. Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, eventually reported the disappearance.9
When questioned about what happened to her daughter, Casey Anthony told police that she left her daughter with a babysitter, Zenaida Gonzalez, on June 9, 2008. She claims that she went to pick her daughter up and the child was gone. She states that she did not inform the police because she didn't want to worry her parents and was investigating on her own.9
When police questioned Zenaida Gonzalez about the story, she told police she didn't know Anthony. The apartment where Anthony allegedly left her daughter on June 9 had been vacant for five months. According to police, Anthony also lied about her place of employment.9

Indictment

On October 14, 2008, a Florida grand jury indicted Anthony on charges of first-degree murder in the death of her daughter.11 The trial date was set for January 5, 2009, and Anthony pleaded not guilty to the charges.12
On April 6, 2009, Florida prosecutors released more evidence they say links Casey Anthony to the murder of her daughter Caylee. Newly released evidence includes interviews with utility worker Roy Kronk, as well as interviews with jail guards who say Anthony asked to be given a sedative when she learned her daughters remains had been found.13

The Body is Found

The identity of the body was confirmed on December 19, 2008, and the medical examiner determined that the cause of death was a homicide.14 Anthony's trial for the murder of her daughter, Caylee, is scheduled to begin on October 12, 2009.15

Court Hearing

On January 8, 2009, Casey Anthony was ordered to appear in court for the evidence hearing in the first-degree murder case against her. The hearing was requested by prosecutors who sought to restrict Anthony's attorney from copying, redistributing or putting the images of Caylee Anthony's X-rays on the Internet. Baez argued that he needed to share the images of Caylee Anthony's remains with defense experts out-of-state.16

Quote

"You left your child with someone who doesn't exist at an apartment you cannot identify. You lied to your parents. It appears you care so little for your child you didn't report her missing until five weeks later."—Judge John Jordan9
